“I sent some of my jewelry designs to the costume department of The O.C. The costume designer was thrilled with our work and used almost all of the designs we sent her on the show. As a direct result of this free product placement, we received contracts to supply our jewelry to The O.C. Web site, where fans could buy products from the show!”
Do Celebrity Endorsements Really Influence Consumers?
You’ve probably noticed that the public is obsessed with celebrities right now. Just look at the news that captures our attention on a daily basis – even on traditional news networks like CNN. Did you know that Anna Nicole Smith’s death accounted for nearly one-fourth of all coverage on cable television during that period? And need I mention Britney Spears?
When People Magazine debuted in 1974, it was the leading celebrity news magazine for some time. Not long ago, Us Weekly was a monthly publication called Us. Now it’s a weekly. Star was a newspaper tabloid – now it’s a full-fledged magazine.
Today, newsstand shelves overflow with celebrity magazines like Us Weekly, Star, InTouch, Life & Style, OK!, and more. It’s no surprise that sales and subscriptions of these magazines have increased (I’ll show you how to get in them later on in this Special Report). Meanwhile, circulations at traditional news magazines like Time and Newsweek have declined.
The Entertainment Tonights, Extras, and Inside Editions have spawned entire networks devoted to capturing celebrities’ every move. And let’s not forget online, with sites (and now a TV show) like TMZ and blogs like Perez Hilton bringing in over seven million viewers a day!
Let’s face it. This burgeoning curiosity regarding celebrities is about more than their performances and their daily movements past the public eye. We also care about what they eat, what they wear, where they vacation, and more. And this interest is not only a trend among adults. The highly-coveted “tween” market cares as well!
You may think teens are the group most heavily influenced by celebrities – and you’re right! But don’t underestimate them:
According to Entrepreneur magazine, "72% of children between the ages of 10 and 13 (“tweens”) say that seeing their favorite celebrity use a brand makes them want to use it as well."
And according to a recent USA Today article, “Generation Y, those between 8 and 26, are considered the most important generation for retailers and marketers because of their spending power and the influence they have over what their parents buy.”
Who Exactly is Swayed by Celebrities?
Just about everybody!
Housewives are influenced by Oprah’s Favorite Things episodes and celebrities pitching their products on QVC. Businessmen are swayed by Pamela Anderson’s and Jenny McCarthy’s appearances at Las Vegas tradeshows. And teenagers are won over by Jessica Simpson and P-Diddy in ProActive infomercials.
As I mentioned earlier, today’s culture – from politics to fashion to music to sports – is celebrity-driven. In fact, virtually every large corporation has some tie-in to a celebrity.
It’s in your best interest to start ‘celebrity-izing’ your business right away. The longer you wait the more profits and opportunities you’ll lose.
Why You Must 'Celebrity-ize' Your Business
“Surely, what works selling to the blue-haired little old ladies in the magazines they read while sitting under the hair dryers at the beauty parlor couldn’t possibly influence executives with MBAs and cigar chompin’, street-wise owners running trucking companies. If you’re honest and intelligent, you’ll see that there’s NO difference. ‘Celebrity-izing’ your business is NOT an option.”
- Dan Kennedy
There are 5 main reasons you should “celebrity-ize” your business now:
1. Using celebrities adds instant credibility. The customer, consciously or unconsciously, believes, “If a celebrity is using this, the product and the company who makes it must be good.
2. Using celebrities grabs attention. That’s why infomercials use celebrities all the time. It makes the television viewer stop flipping channels for a few seconds if he or she notices a major celebrity in one (and hopefully keeps him or her there as well!).
3. Using celebrities provides enhanced market credibility. It becomes much easier to get your product on store shelves because retailers prefer products with celebrity tie-ins.
4. Using celebrities leads to increased media exposure. It’s much easier to get free publicity if your products are used by celebrities. The media knows people pay attention to and are interested in celebrities and will tune into their program when you include one.
5. It’s fun! You’ll be able to enjoy all the extra attention, and begin to have contact with celebrities who earlier may have seemed to be living in a world beyond your reach.
If you’re not using celebrity or celebrities in your business, you’re losing out!
It's Easy to "Celebrity-ize" Your Business...
You’re probably thinking to yourself, “This all sounds great. I can’t wait to get my products in the hands of celebrities for free exposure and star-powered publicity so I can "celebrity-ize" my business!
But you’re also probably wondering what the exact, step-by-step moves are you need to start making now, right?
And I’ll tell you in just a moment. But first, let me share with you some other ways you can use celebrities in your business, or what I collectively call “Celebrity Leverage”…
What is Celebrity Leverage Exactly?
Celebrity Leverage is more than just getting your products in celebrities’ hands. It’s also about using a wide-range of celebrity-related publicity tactics that make your business, your products, and even yourself famous!
Once you discover the deliciously effective secrets of Celebrity Leverage, the media notices and wants to cover you. Customers flock to you and beg to buy your products and use your services. And they’re willing – and happy – to pay higher prices! Retailers contact you for the privilege of stocking your products in their stores.
You’ll learn ways to seemingly transform yourself into a celebrity expert. Imagine what your near-instant celebrity status would mean to your business. Imagine being booked on talk shows, being interviewed by radio personalities, and hobnobbing with stars in the green rooms of television studios!
Keep reading to learn about how you can do all this, plus some of my favorite Celebrity Leverage techniques to transform your business into a “celebrity magnet” like…
Hiring a Celebrity for Your Event...
One of the many ways celebrities earn money when they’re not working on film, television, or music projects is by appearing at and/or hosting events. These include restaurant and store openings, nightclub parties, trade show and seminar appearances, etc.
Internet marketing guru Yanik Silver frequently holds seminars and customer appreciation events centered on a Hollywood spy theme. His Underground™ Online Seminars have become extremely popular because of all the underground Internet marketing secrets he reveals… and because of his clever tie-ins with popular celebrities, television shows, and movies.
At one Underground Online Seminar, Yanik tied into celebrities by holding an Austin Powers inspired event complete with roller girls, a VIP party, and a live appearance by Verne Troyer (Mini-Me in the Austin Powers movies) with photo and autograph opportunities. He even gave away a Mini Cooper “getaway spy car”!
Yanik says,
“Surprisingly, it’s not as much as you’d think to book a celebrity [depending on their status], and it can really add a lot to your events. Having a celebrity not only gives your guests excitement, but provides additional reasons to contact your customers. For example, I sent a personalized postcard out to my list announcing Verne Troyer was coming. The front of the postcard had Mini-Me’s picture with the words “[First Name], Can’t Wait to Meet You!” and Verne’s autographed signature at the bottom.”
And Yanik kept going. His next two events continued along the celebrity/spy theme. For the U.S. version, Yanik hired actor Peter Graves from the original Mission Impossible television series to make an appearance. The U.K. event had a James Bond slant, and Yanik gave away an Aston Martin race-day experience there.
“One of the biggest issues most marketers have is being BORING!” Yanik says. Zzzzzzzzzz… You want your customers and prospects to be thinking, ‘Wow! What’s this crazy guy (or gal) going to do next?’ It’s no secret the majority of your customers/prospects live somewhat boring lives. So it’s not enough anymore just to present an offer filled with benefits… it’s also got to entertain them and keep it exciting.”
Using Celebrity Wranglers
If you just want celebrities to show up at your event, and not to perform or host, you may want to use a celebrity “wrangler” to make the invitations and arrangements. Celebrity wranglers are the go-to people when you want celebrities to show up at your event just like the public would. The wranglers have a network of celebrities they invite to all types of events. You pay the wrangler a flat fee or a per-celebrity rate that varies depending on your needs.
Hiring Celebrity Speakers
Have you ever wanted a celebrity to speak at an event other than a party, say for a seminar or a corporate function? Hiring a celebrity to speak (and maybe even take photos with your attendees) is another great way to increase ticket sales and create a memorable event.
Using Celebrity Voices
It’s no surprise that large companies hire celebrities to do voiceovers for commercials all the time. I remember once in high school, my dad came home from work excited because he had received a voicemail message from Kirk Cameron, a star of the hit TV show at the time Growing Pains. It was really him asking my dad to contribute some money to a charity that had hired him to record the voice message. Of course my dad saved it, and when he got home, he played it for me, my brother, my sister, and my mom. I’m sure he also played it for friends and people at his office.
While your voice may be wonderful, most people aren’t going to play your voice mail message for friends and family – no offense! But if you use a celebrity voice, they probably will. Imagine the possibilities for a new product, sale, store opening, club event, etc., and how many people might hear about it for each message sent!
Whose Voice is That?
I should point out that one school of thought on celebrity voice overs believes it’s better to not have the voice say which celebrity is speaking. You may have noticed television commercials where you recognized the voiceover but the celebrity never said who he or she was.
One example that comes to mind is Wendie Malick, who played Nina Van Horn on the TV show Just Shoot Me. Malick’s voice is recognizable, and she has recorded radio and television voiceovers for Marshall’s. But the commercials never say who she is or make any type of reference to her.
Growing up, my friend’s mom was the voice of my hometown’s Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. It was always fun to hear her say “Welcome to Atlanta” whenever I returned home to the airport from a trip. In the past, airports would use generic voices. Now however, many airports are starting to use celebrity voices to stand out and get attention!
According to a recent USA Todayarticle, the goal is to “make [the announcements] stand out against the general sameness of air travel and to improve communications with travelers.”
In Nashville, country singer Lee Ann Womack says, “This is Lee Ann Womack inviting you to relax and unwind in one of the airport’s many restaurants. Thank you for choosing Nashville International Airport.” According to the article, Charlie Daniels, Wynonna Judd, and members of Sugarland and Lonestar bands have also recorded announcements for the airport.
Nashville Airport is one of the first to switch from using generic voices to celebrity voices. But Las Vegas Airport has used them since the 1970s, with stars like Dick Clark, Phyllis Diller, Rich Little, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Cosby recording them – many times for free in exchange for the exposure! And what city knows how to sell using celebrities better than Las Vegas?
Becoming a Celebrity Expert...
You may not be a household name – yet! – but there are strategies you can follow to become a famous expert in the media. As you become more visible in the public’s eye, people will begin to associate you with that subject area and the media will begin to call on you for interviews, commentary, etc.
For example, if you’re a real estate agent, you want people to think of you whenever they think of real estate. You may not be known the world over like Donald Trump, but you can become the “go-to” realtor in your local area.
You can do the same thing whether you’re a doctor, lawyer, mortgage broker, plumber, fitness trainer, plastic surgeon, massage therapist, etc. It doesn’t matter what your area of expertise is – you can become a celebrity expert!
As marketing expert Dan Janal says,
“Experts get respect. Experts get hired. Experts get their books and products sold. It’s as simple as that.”
Becoming a Celebrity Author...
The idea of writing a book can be intimidating. Trust me, I know!
If you’re uncomfortable expressing yourself on paper or are burdened with your day-to-day work, it can be downright overwhelming. However, becoming an author is one of the best ways to be perceived as a celebrity expert.
Writing a book should be a crucial part of your professional goals. Regardless of the kind of business you’re running, having a book distinguishes you from the thousands – if not millions – of other business owners. It transforms you from Joe Smith, owner of XYZ, into Joe Smith, best-selling author of How to XYZ in Ten Easy Steps.
Just as I’ve explained throughout this Special Report that celebrities can make your product or company more visible, authoring a book also enhances your status and turns you into a celebrity in your field as soon as it’s published – or a big celebrity if your book sells well.
The Benefits of Being an Author...
Writing a book helps you:
-
Get publicity in print and national media
-
Appear on local and national TV and radio programs
-
Speak at local, regional and national meetings or seminars
-
Diversify your business with the book as a premium offer to generate leads
-
Expand your client base by establishing your credibility as an expert
You should look at your book as a way to get more customers – sort of like an expanded business card. Imagine people asking you for your business card and you hand them your book instead! They’re going to remember you, and be less likely to throw away or lose your book like they would a normal business card.
Getting Covered in Print Publications...
In spite of the attention given to the Internet and TV these days, “old fashioned” print media remains a powerful tool for publicizing your business. Publications still have to fill their pages and consequently will seek out new products and services. That’s great news for anyone seeking publicity!
You can get various types of print coverage. For instance, a publication might publish an article about you, your product, and/or your company. An article may focus only on you or you could be included in a round-up feature about several products or companies.
Alternatively, you may be interviewed as an “expert” by a staff writer or freelancer who is preparing an article or doing an interview feature. For example, publications like Money and BusinessWeek are always quoting investing experts, so a financial planner or business guru with a unique spin on the markets could be appealing to a writer looking for a new “source.”
What About Getting in Celebrity Magazines?
What’s the key to getting your business or product featured in a celebrity magazine? Melanie Bromley, Us Weekly’s Los Angeles bureau chief says,
“The key to coverage is a celebrity tie-in. Without that, we just can’t cover it. My pet peeve is pitches that don’t have a celebrity tie-in.”
Celebrity Magazine Gift Guides...
Rather than paying for expensive advertising, there are other ways to get your products in celebrity magazines… free! And the best part is, this free coverage implies endorsement from the magazine. One of these ways is getting your product in celebrity magazine gift guides.
Usually featured in magazines like InStyle, People, Details, GQ, and Entertainment Weekly right before a holiday, gift guides showcase “great gifts for mom” or “great gifts for dad,” “great gifts for graduates,” “Christmas gifts for under $100,” etc.
The cool thing about magazine gift guides is that they always include a photo along with ordering information. And you don’t have to pay to be featured – you just have to know how to pitch your product to the right editor.
Appearing on Radio Shows...
Although you may think of television as a more “glamorous” medium, radio remains a very strong outlet for guests ranging from book authors, experts, and anyone else trying to promote something. From the guest’s viewpoint, going on a radio show can be less of a hassle; you can be at home or at your office and call in to the station to do the interview. You have to prepare your pitch – just as you would for TV – but you don’t have the added worries of what you’re wearing and your appearance. You can be in your underwear or pajamas and no one will know!
Another benefit to radio is the ability to target a specific audience. For example, if you’re promoting a product that will be of interest to Generation X, then you should search for a program that this group listens to regularly. If you’ve written a book directed at Baby Boomers, then you’ll want to be on a call-in talk show, possibly midday or early evening. And with satellite radio like Sirius and XM, the possibilities of getting on a niche channel aimed at your target audience are endless!
Appearing on Television...
Whether you have a new line of clothing, a start-up company, or a hot new product, television is the most effective way to reach the largest possible audience and one of the fastest ways to make yourself, your product, or your business famous.
If you’ve never been on television before, seek out local programs first. Watch the local talk and news shows in your area to get a sense for what topics they feature and what types of stories its reporters like to cover. Think about how you can pitch yourself and what your “story angle” or “hook” is (something that will get and keep both the producer’s – and the audience’s) attention.
What About Oprah?
Imagine: An appearance on one of the top-rated television programs in the country, an endorsement from one of the most powerful media moguls in the world, and tons of follow-up publicity for your product and company! These are exactly the reasons why almost every entrepreneur, author and expert dreams of getting on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Don’t forget that you can also pitch your product to Oprah for her highly popular Oprah’s Favorite Things episodes. These are the shows where she presents gifts to the audience – including a car to every audience member during one taping in 2004!
Undoubtedly, the visibility from Oprah choosing and recommending a product on air as one of her “favorite things” will be a boost to any company included in the round-up. After Karen Bromley of New York City’s The Bromley Group got her client UGG Australia on Oprah’s Favorite Things for Christmas in 2000, sales increased 400% over the next four years. Sales for Scott Schroeder’s family-owned popcorn company Garrett Popcorn Shops) increased over 100% when Oprah featured the popcorn on her Favorite Things Show.
My client Susan Miller created a YouTube video with her Web cam, posted the link on Oprah’s Web site, and got a call from a producer the same day about being on the show!

(I had to block out some of the information for privacy purposes.)
Getting on QVC and HSN...
Though they’re obviously very different from news and TV talk shows, reality programs also offer an excellent way to get publicity. Think of the contestants on The Apprentice – they were all introduced by name and company affiliation on the show. And although that was a business-themed reality program, there are many other shows where the people who appear get publicity as well, both during the program and in celebrity news magazines like Us Weekly, InTouch, People, Star, etc. That’s publicity both while the show is airing and even after it’s over (follow-ups, where are they now?, etc.). And you don’t have to be the show’s winner, either. Just being on the show is enough.
Because of the huge amount of exposure reality shows get, there are also a myriad of publicity opportunities after it’s over like speaking, public appearances, joint ventures, endorsements, etc. For example, Kristi Frank, who appeared on the first season of The Apprentice, now speaks at seminars and boot camps for marketers and was hired by Dan Kennedy to help him promote his latest titles in the No B.S. Books series.
Sometimes experts are used to help train the contestants on reality shows and/or to act as guest judges. Look at all of the fashion and beauty gurus who have appeared on shows like America’s Next Top Model, weight-loss experts on The Biggest Loser, and fashion designers on Project Runway.
Presentation skills expert Susan Berkley, President of The Great Voice Company in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, was one of these reality television experts. She appeared on an episode of The Apprentice to help train the contestants in speaking. Now her Web site includes “As Seen On: The Apprentice.” Think of what that mention does for Susan’s credibility!
On ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover, home furnishing and appliance companies get their products shown in exchange for donating them for the homes being built. On Bravo’s Blowout, hairstylist Jonathan Antin had an entire series built around opening a new location of his salon. Reality shows built around existing businesses include Patti Novak’s Confessions of a Matchmaker and Patti Stanger’s Millionaire Matchmaker (matchmaking); The Poway Family’s Family Plots and Intervention (funeral home and rehab/drug counseling); and Jeff Lewis’ Flipping Out and Million Dollar Listing (real estate).
Becoming an Internet Celebrity...
The Internet has recently undergone a transformation that makes it incredibly easy – and pretty much free – for you to promote yourself and your business online. This transformation is widely known as “Web 2.0.” What it really means is the sudden evolution of the Web from static to more dynamic and user-generated content.
Sites like Wikipedia, MySpace, blogs, YouTube, etc., allow the visitor to easily create, publish and comment on content others can see. This gives you an enormous advantage if you want to create a personalized presence on the Web and a presence for your business, product or service.
Becoming a Celebrity Blogger...
Blogs are short for “web logs.” Think of them as an online journal or diary for your business. Bloggers write and publish entries (called “posts”) on their blogs daily, weekly, or at random. Some of the most popular bloggers post several times a day!
Many people still think of blogs as stream-of-conscious ramblings about what the blogger did that day, what they ate for lunch, and other trivialities about their life. But don’t think of them like that. The reality is that if you own a business, you should have a blog!
A blog serves three main purposes for your business: First, it gains customer loyalty because you can let your customers know thoughts about why and how your company operates, either through posts from yourself or from your employees. Second, it helps your company’s Web site get ranked higher up in the search engines, because major search engines like Google prefer sites who have constantly updated content than those who don’t. Third, it creates community and involvement because they allow readers to add comments to your posts.
Perez Hilton...
Mario Armando Lavandeira, Jr. started blogging and gossiping about celebrities because “it seemed easy.” His blog, Perez Hilton soon caught on with readers, and currently over two million people view it every day (and up to seven million when major celebrity news breaks!). Lavandeira has since taken the name of his blog, calling himself Perez Hilton.
When Britney Spears shaved her head, Perez Hilton says his blog was viewed by over 4.75 million unique visitors in a 24-hour period. All of this exposure has led to him having guest appearances on reality shows like Kathy Griffin’s My Life on the D-List, The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency and MTV’s Celebrity Rap Superstar. He’s also co-hosted The View and now even has his own reality show on VH1 called What Perez Said!
In Perez’s case, blogging is his business. So every appearance he gets on TV or in magazines like Vanity Fair and newspapers like The Los Angeles Times is great Celebrity Leverage. But you don’t have to be Perez Hilton to become a celebrity by having your own blog!
If you don’t want to maintain your own blog, you should at least leverage the power of other blogs and bloggers. Timothy Ferriss, the 29-year-old entrepreneur who wrote the instant New York Times best-seller, The 4-Hour Workweek, credits much of his book’s success to getting it mentioned on other well-known blogs.
